It started, as many homeschool moments do, with a dramatic sigh.

- The Barrett‑Jackson Car Show in Scottsdale
- And the legendary Quartzsite RV Show
All three. Practically back‑to‑back.
At the same time, their uncle had been seriously considering buying a travel trailer.
Here’s the catch: he has a regular truck with a modest towing capacity. A boat? Easy. An off‑road side‑by‑side? No problem. But a camper that could sleep six people and stay under 10,000 pounds fully loaded—with food, gear, clothes, and water?
That’s where math stops being theoretical.
The Morning Everything Changed
The next morning, the kids woke up to a surprise.
Their school day had been cut in half.
We knocked out a few core lessons early—just enough to keep momentum—and then I told them to grab shoes and clipboards. We were heading out.
Our destination? An RV show.
But not to wander aimlessly.
Their job was to help answer one very real question: Could their uncle actually tow one of these campers safely?
That meant learning how to read the tags on each rig. Dry weight. Gross vehicle weight rating. Fresh, grey, and black water capacities. Sleeping capacity. Length. Price.

As we walked through each rig, something interesting happened. The kids stopped just admiring and started analyzing:

- “That washer/dryer setup is cool, but it adds weight and cost.”
- “This towable makes sense, but only if the truck can handle it.”
They weren’t just collecting numbers—they were evaluating tradeoffs, which is one of the most valuable life skills there is.

We also recorded short video walkthroughs with the kids explaining:
- What they liked about each RV
- Which amenities mattered most
- Why one coach worked better for a family than another
Without even realizing it, they were practicing communication skills, structured thinking, and verbal reasoning—all core educational skills—without the pressure of a classroom presentation.
Towable vs. Drivable: A Lesson You Can’t Teach on Paper
One of the strongest learning moments came from comparing towable campers vs. drivable RVs.
The kids could clearly see:
- Why weight matters differently for each
- How water weight impacts safety
- Why price alone doesn’t tell the full story
- How families choose based on lifestyle, not just looks
This is practical knowledge most adults don’t fully grasp until years later.
